I didnt' ask for a whistle this year, as I'm working on the ones I've already got, but I mentioned an interest in an Ocarina, and my lovely bride must have heard at some point because this was in my stocking:

It sounds great, and the fingering is not far off a whistle(except at the higher notes). There's no upper register, so you got to work with the notes you have.

I think I became interested in it after hearing Tingstad and Rumble's The Gift--a Christmas CD I've had and still enjoy for about 17 years now.

I'm having fun learning this little critter!

You'll have to send us a audio clip when you've learnt to play it. Very nice.

You could post one now, and another later so we could celebrate your progress :) .

Jim I haven't gotten up the courage to post a whistle clip yet!  (baby steps, baby steps)

I have figured out how to record using Audacity, so I'm getting closer....

They're a lot like uilleann pipers, just a bit less irritable, and their gear doesn't cost half as much.
