In mid December we had a visitor from New Zealand. She had never been to this area before, so she wanted to see Alcatraz, the famous island prison in the middle of San Franciso Bay.

Unfortunately it was a foggy day, not good for taking distant pix. Here's the island as we drew near on the ferry:

here's a pic of the 3 of us taken by a nice tourist (my wife is the one in the blue):

inside, an avenue between two cell blocks:

a typical cell. all inmates had cells to themselves alone, since they were the "worst of the worst":

yes, it's true, California has a law, "play a whistle, go to prison," or at least my wife wishes they did. I'm playing a tune I made up called "They can lock me in prison but they can't keep my face from breaking out."

whistling a tune out front:

the prison closed in the early 1960's. About ten years later a group of American Indians "took over" the island as a protest. The American gov't didn't really care since no one was using the island for anything else, so they just let them stay. The graffitti dates from that era:

the aging water tower:

our friend also wanted to see the California redwoods, which are less than 50 miles from my condo:
this is obviously a cross section showing the age of this redwood. the center shows that it sprouted during the Byzantine era:

typical redwood, but one of the larger ones:

Nice. We visited the redwoods when we were in S.F. just over a month ago, but we didn't go to Alcatraz for lack of time (though we stood at the peer and looked at it ;) ). The Muir Woods park was a highlight of our visit.

Looks like you're right at home in Alcatraz.

Thanks for the photos and explaining a little about Alcatraz. I loved the giant redwoods. I had no idea they were so huge. I would love to see some in real life.

I bet Mack could make a lot of whistles from those trees.

I liked the pics, Blackhawk, especially seeing the size of the redwoods. The info on Alkatraz was interesting. It's funny, but, I think your guest, from New Zealand, looks a little like your wife.

That's interesting, Lyn, because I thought so, too!

Nifty photos, Blackhawk. The water tower is a great shot, really appeals to me.

So ... does your guest from New Zealand whistle?

Great pics Blackhawk! So you do carry a whistle around with you! Good!

I bet that Alcatraz was a pretty comfy place compared to what Paul and Silas must have endured. Still, I wouldn't want to spend any time there.

Right on both counts, Rod. It was Disneyland compared to prisons in Biblical times, or even compared to modern prisons outside the US. But I don't want to spend any more than a couple of hours in any of them, and only then to take pictures.

The prison Paul and Silas were in when they came to Philippi in AD50/51 is one hour from our house. They were savagely beaten by a Roman legionnaire (and I doubt if Roman soldiers were wimps). The bible also records that they were put in stocks. In Greece this meant the legs and arms were stretched uncomfortably apart and tied to a wooden rod. I camped in Philippi for two nights last year and though the Philippian swamp of Paul's day has been drained I was still eaten alive by mosquitoes. I don't think I would have been singing in that prison!
