I understand that PrintMusic, amongst others, will produce notation from microphone input. I'd be curious to know how accurate this is. Have used a MIDI keyboard to put things into notation, but my timing on keyboard (probably coupled with a poor interface) did not produce very satisfactory real-time notation.

Jim, I tried using it (in PrintMusic) with the whistle through a function called MicNotater. The results were dismal. However, I figured that was more an indication of my playing than the program. It seemed to pick up more notes than I thought I was playing. Going from a midi to printed music works well. From live music ... not so well in my experience. A better player might have had better results. Trying it in a studio setting instead of at an office desk open to interruptions may also help. ;)

Thanks for your response, Judy. After I posted this, I did a search for reviews. One person termed the mic notator feature "a joke;" another indicated that it would work only with fairly simple melodies. (So maybe don't be so quick to blame the quality of your playing. :)) My primary need would be with melodies which are quite syncopated and difficult for me to figure out the time notation. Perhaps this feature will be improved enough to really use it some time within the next 10 years.

The new sibelius has a notation from microphone feature. Have not tried it as I don't have the money to upgrade at the moment from my current version. Also SONAR 8 my recording software has a feature in v-vocal that changes pitch to midi.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good, free music notation software that can be used to write drumline cadences. I dont need anything like Finale or Sibelius. Has anyone used Musescore? How easy is it to write drumline music using it? If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks
