Post subject:  Free Online File Storage question

I've been having problems emailing some music clips and wondered about storing them online ... but don't really want open access on the world wide wobbly like on EZfolk. (Can't even imagine the comments that would bring! :P )

These 3 spots looking interesting:

Does anyone have any experience with them? Are any what I'm looking for -- which is free storage of music files that can only be accessed by others through a link I would provide?

I'm clueless on stuff like this and appreciate any opinions from all of you here. Thanks!

mydatabus.com is what you want.

I tried to use mydatabus, but I couldn't get it to hot link. When you link to it, it just thanks you for downloading and starts a download to the computer of whoever linked to it, so I couldn't embed it on a website. Any solutions to that?

I switched to Fileden, which will embed, but the ads drive you nuts.

Isn't that what a hot link is?

I have some videos hosted on mydatabus, but embedded in a web site. They play via a Flash player. Is that what you're looking for? Audio files could probably be hosted and played the same way, like in a Flash music player or something.

Judy, as far as what you want - just creating a link to a file for playback - there are several places out there... I like mydatabus and have no problems with it.

Just what I needed. Nice one Kitty. Is there anything technical that you don't know?

Oh yes! I just keep quiet when those things come up and let somebody else answer. That way I still appear to know everything.

I have no idea. That's probably what it is. My first experience with the term "hot link" was last week when my sister tried to access music on my EZFolk page and couldn't get the buttons to work. Being a busy person, she wanted "hot links" in the email where she could just stream the songs like we do on the Praise Exchange and the Music forum. I ended up just linking to TPE and letting her stream them that way. (Hope that's okay. I didn't "hot link" anybody else's material.)

I used a flash player with mydatabus, and it kept flashing "waiting...waiting...waiting..." So I tried the same song with Fileden and it's up and running. It could be a problem with the particular flash player.

Thanks, Kitty. I thought that was the one you had recommended before. :)

Connie, thanks for the input, too. It adds to the picture. If you had problems, I'm at least forewarned. :?

My guess is it's a user error of some sort...the user being me.

Speaking of links, here's one of my files hosted on mydatabus. This is the intro I created to a show my daughter and her friend were going to do as a video podcast. They just couldn't pull it off with school and other activities so I don't know if they'll ever do it. It was a good idea.....

Hmmm ... I can't seem to open that file, Kitty. It downloads, open up a program called Wave Pad ... and then doesn't show anything. What am I doing wrong?

... AHA! It finally tells me I need Real Player installed. Okay .... I'll get around to that tomorrow ...

HOLD ON!! Before you install Real Player, there's an open source alternative to Real Player that's not as invasive as Real Player. Real Player runs in the background, lowering your available resources. It's also well-nigh impossible to cleanly uninstall. I've heard techie gurus recommending Real Alternative. Here's a link:

Good thing I enjoy procrastinating ... thanks, Connie! The last thing I need is something sucking down more resources. My laptop is a couple of years old with only 256 MB of RAM ... with only 18 MB available. (Can't even remember where I found that bit of info!) A computer literate friend is going to add more RAM soon.

Max it out, Judy, if you can! I have a gig and a quarter and can get another 750 megs or so, and plan to do it when I can. :D
