...or start the first note in the song higher. There are very few songs whistles actually cannot play.

Thanks for the great lists!!

That works if you can choose the the key. :D

Octave splitting is another favorite for managing awkward tunes for whistlers and other flutists.

Yeah, octave splitting is a favorite of mine. People who don't know the whistle's limitations think you're just being fancy.

Play the note an octave up if you don't have it lower. That is what you meant, right, Adrian?

One thing I've learned is to check this forum. I simply forget it exists. We have so many forums now, and I usually only check the fellowship forum.

Interesting thread, Kelly!

I've learned that the salt of the earth plays whistles and they mostly post here on PWA.

It's sobering, to me, to realize how long I've been playing whistles and am still a beginner.

Me too! I often wonder how long it will actually take to master the whistle.

Nice topic ....

What I have learned .....

Whistles are as different as people and each can give you pleasure if you take the time to get to know them.

Playing music on a whistle can take you out of this world and into a better one

Whistles can laugh with you or cry with you .. reflecting the moods we are in

For some reason ... playing a NAf can make playing Low Ds much easier ... much more aware of the breath requirements I believe.

Whistle players are just like "normal" people in temperment but PWA whistle players are tied together by Jesus and that is pretty cool.

Things I don't like about whistles ....

They are seductive ... able to turn a strong willed person into a babbling idiot when he sees a new one that he doesn't have and "HAS TO HAVE"!

I recognize a couple...the pan flutes and the south American, dark paint chip-carved to reveal a blonde wood underneath. Those two do the rounds up here at the festivals. The gentleman (you?) was looking over some nicer-looking flutes, there. I saw a native North American playing a nice flute (similar to those) at his kiosk at our festival recently, but only the cheapies were for sale.

Aha! Yeah, that can work well. Especially on whistle, where playing the whole thing an octave up doesn't always work so well

They were Quenas. I didn't buy any, even though Blackhawk, who was taking the picture, was silently hoping I would. :?
