There are six holes on a whistle, and twelve notes in a chromatic scale...

What are some of your favorite (heh) ways of playing the chromatic notes on the whistle? How do you deal with the odd annoying little A#, G#, F natural that pop up every now and then?

Cross fingerings, half holes, whatever you do...

G# is the only one I usually see. I half hole it. I find it is easier if the G# is followed by an A. If it is followed by an F# I find it to be more difficult.

:shock: I have enough trouble with half-holing as it is, but your scenario of a G# followed by an F# frightens me!
As an aside, wouldn't the title of this thread make an outstanding name for a band

Seriously, the idea of cross-fingering scared me until I actually put some time into practicing the technique. Now I can play C like this: OXXXOX, and G# like this: XXOXXO, at a pretty decent speed. Be careful though, it seems to work differently on different whistles!

F: I half-hole the E.

G#: if I wasn't expecting it, I'd more than likely, half-hole it. Depending on the arrangement, I half-hole or cross-finger it, playing xxoxxx (or xxoxxo, on other whistles).

A#: if I wasn't expecting it, I'd probably half-hole it. If planned, I cross-finger it most of the time, playing xoxxxx (or xoxxxo, on other whistles).

It boils down to what the arrangement is and which way I can best play that note, at the time.

I consider the whistle to be as chromatic as the simple 6-hole flute and so practice chromatic scales to help train the fingers. I half hole everything except C in the first octave but use 0XX000 or 0XXX0X instead depending on which whistle I'm playing. I find that the chromatic notes in the third octave can differ quite a lot from whistle to whistle (when I dare to play them).
