Has anybody played a Dixon Trad or the more expensive heavy brass whistles? I am looking for some advice/opinions.

I've never tried the Dixon Trad, but, I have the Dixon Solid Brass Whistle, which is the heavy one, RonKiley, but I don't have it here with me in Florida. It's louder than his previous more expensive brass whistle. He made this one for more volume. I haven't played it in a while, but I will when I get home and let you know. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I've had both, Ron. The heavy brass takes a long time to reach a "warm" temp for non-clogging playing ... and just way too heavy for my personal taste. It seemed to make my hands grow weary simply from the weight. Dixons have always been among my favorites, but the heavier brass and the first version of the heavy aluminum are my least favorite of the bunch. The Trad has a better tone to my ear, as well as being much more comfortable to hold. The Trad also comes in nickel now, too. I have one but haven't played it yet. (I've had a cold and want to avoid contaminating it.)

... as always, YMMV. :)

I have a nickel Trad - it sounds thin to me. The pitch is really good, easy to play in tune, but always find myself going back to the Clarke. Here's the two, side by side:

The Clarke is first, I think, then the Trad.

Both whistles sound quite good to me, but I like the first one better. If that was the Clarke then I vote for Clarke!

One thing further about the Trad - it seems quite small to me. Don't know if that's good ro bad, but it does seem shorter and much thinner physically than the Clarke.

jrc, that was really beautiful, with both whistles!

I also liked the Clarke better. My respect for the Clarkes continues to grow as I play more. I think they're well worth the price of a few extra breathing pauses.

Good playing!
