Post subject:  Half holing on recorders

Those who had lessons at school may not realise that at intermediate level and above that it is common practice to half hole some notes on recorders just as you would on a whistle or keyless flute. If you are a recorder player this is a skill well worth learning. This technique is mainly used as an alternative to cross fingering at speed on some notes e.g. Bb. Hope someone finds this helpful.

I was wondering about that. I have been trying to learn new keys on the recorder. I have been doing scales and playing tunes in D, G, F, and C. I was playing a hymn in C that had a G# in it. I found it easier to half hole than cross finger. I wasn't sure if that was proper or not.
