This is an advisory for my parents home, Bluefield VA (SW VA):

Expect wind chills to range from 5 below zero in the lower
elevations to near fifteen below zero at the higher elevations.

Not sure about the wind chills. Forecast here is for lows from -5 to 5 degrees over the next week. Am liking the cold less as the years pass.

Looks like many of us will see plenty of cold.

Current temp here is 8. The predicted low tonight is 7. I think 'they' will miss it -- again. ;)

Here's the weather alert for the county to the west of us. (Can't say I've ever noticed their weather being much different from ours. )
Quote:
...VERY COLD CONDITIONS TO CONTINUE INTO THE NEW YEAR... Cold wind chills of 5 to 15 below zero will be present overnight. Arctic air will persist across the region for the first half of the week. The coldest temperatures will occur Monday night with the entire region forecast to be below zero.

It is not expected to be above freezing here until 1/7/18. Brrrrr! Happy Winter, y'all!

Happy New 2018 to all!

I used to like going out in cold weather; most winters I'd go out cross-country falling. Most of the time now, I like cold weather - as long as I'm indoors, or will be indoors soon.

Just kidding! I did love the cold; could win any game of 'freeze out'. (Family game/joke) My round of cancer surgery a couple of years ago totally flipped my 'thermostat'. I am even wearing a jacket this winter, something rarely seen in my life.

Hmmmmm....... :-k Sounds good to me last week. ;) However the cold has reached us and tonight it will touch 28 degress.
Then up to almost 40 in the day. January and the first two weeks of Febuary are about the extent of our winter here.

jrc, I like winter just fine. Will even disc golf in sub freezing temps once winter gets going, but today’s -30 wind chills go right through all the layers. The Arctic blast is supposed to lift today, though. Sunny and ten degrees by 4pm.

:sunny:

Tommy! That’s cold for there!!

Yup it is. We like to give thanks for the gift of life and to think how to tolerate.
It is 28 here this morning and for twenty minuets now we have watched small hail about the size of BB's. No harsh wind so it should not cause any damage. Well mabe some drivers that don't know how to drive on a slippery road might do some car bumping. The hail is not stacking up much on the ground but house tops are white. I just looked at the road and it is melting as soon as it hits so the roads should not be slipery.
Only up to 32 today, could go down tonight at 27.

And this too shall come to pass. Spring is coming. :sunny2:

Unseasonably warm here.
Teens and twenties nights and forties days.
We need snow, we are way behind.
Last year it was unseasonably cold,
Didn't get above freezing for a month.
When will we be seasonably satisfied?
Actually I do like seasonable change
Within a reasonable range.

Mack, I think Erie, PA would gladly share their 60+ inches of their snow with Colorado.

With all this cold weather, I suddenly envy a bear's ability to sleep the winter away.

I kind of like the Squirrel way. They hibernate lightly, but you always see them out playing when the weather is nice.

I freely admit to being a country person to the bone but still had to chuckle at the weather advisory given for our area tonight:

    NWS Charleston (West Virginia)

With moisture from earlier rain, and spotty drizzle overnight, be prepared for icy spots, especially on untreated roads, in hollers, and other normally shaded areas. Icy spots may become more prevalent overnight, as temperatures slowly fall through the 30s, and into the 20s. Also watch for patchy dense fog. Reduce speed and allow extra distances between vehicles.

My emphasis .... but really, National Weather Service!? Really??

On the up side, it is supposed to hit 60 Thursday. Minus 6 last week, 60 this week could really be called climate change.

Post subject:  Re: Cold!!

  =D> Hollers ... love it!

Guess they know they're audience, huh!

Interesting it comes from Charleston ... I'd almost expect it from one of the stations a little further south in WV (WOAY or WVVA), but in the 'big city' of C-town ... nice.

Edit: Didn't click until after I left the page but NWS?

for some reason that seems to bother me :-k ... maybe it's ok for us to use the colloquialisms but not 'outsiders'?

My thoughts exactly, jrc. Just tisn't proper grammar ... for a governmental agency. Holler (or holla in SE Ohio vernacular) is for the local common folk.

We've got a nice ~ 4" of snow in the yard right now and a Great Pyrenees dog that loves snow. She refuses to come in the house, no matter how cold. Thought about taking a picture and posting it .... but white snow with a white dog just doesn't make for a very interesting picture. Watching her through the security cameras -- if she isn't wagging her tail, you can completely overlook her. She knows this is HER world and we (mainly my brother) are her servants ....
