Spammers are getting more and more clever, and lately I've been aggressively dealing with them.

You guys don't see most of them, but we were getting like 12-15 hits a day - got it down to about 5. If I Google an email and it comes up on an IP abuse report, or comes up with a name other than the registered user, the IP is banned and posts are deleted. A lot of them are in Cyrillic and it's pretty obvious. Some of them I'm not so sure and two have gotten by me, but they've been deleted as well.

I hope I haven't denied anyone access who genuinely wanted to contribute. If that's the case let me know and I'll try to fix it. I don't think I can 'unban' and IP address however.

Trying to keep this a safe place. If anything looks problematic let me know and I'll try to fix it. If anyone knows anything about forums and can give me some guidance it would be greatly appreciated. I truly don't mind doing it, just don't want to get too heavy-handed.

Hey, jrc, I've had a couple of the spammers hit my message box. Deleted the first, haven't read the second but haven't deleted it yet. Do you need any info on the spammer before hitting the 'buh-bye' button?

I got them too, and it's not the first time. There's nothing we need there, please delete asap.

Thanks Judy!

I ran a bbs that had similar problems. Had to close the membership to get them to stop.

That sounds like a great solution, Daniel. The board certainly isn't growing.

... and it is good to see you here!

Judging from the name of the website displayed, the couple of new "members" today probably aren't here for the whistle-talk...

Functionally that's what we've done. Any posts must be preceded by an introduction that's approved by a moderator. If that's not done they get a couple of inbox messages and a 'warning', and after a bit if there's no movement or response the posts are deleted. If they post anything obscene the user and the IP address is banned. Most of you won't see the new posts because that introduction has not been offered.

jrc, is there any way to stop 'unapproved new members' from sending private messages? I usually ban anyone who puts dreck in a PM to prevent a repeat -- but "newbies" unable to PM would be nice. 8)

I have two more new PMs in a differant language. Looks like one of them is advertising Shark TV.

I looked at the PWA member list and it looks like someone went in with a program that signed up thousands of members within minutes of each other?

Hmmmmmm.......... :-k

Have you seen a pattern for where they are from? Most hacker attempts are from Russia and I'd think there would be a pattern with spammers too. It should be possible to block certain countries from even accessing the site.

When board has a closed membership, you have to create a form or some other place for people to apply for membership rather than automatic.
Another trick is to ban the IP address of the intruder.
Does the current new membership login use the latest form of captcha?

I get private messages from the spammers and most of the time it is in Russia. I don't read their messages, I just instantly delete since them since they might be carrying a viral payload.

What I don't understand is why people want to push their crass email messages? You can identify that it's going to be crass from someone with an ID like 'sementub' -- it's disgusting and I'm not going to open or read any of their content.
Maybe they're attacking us with this garbage because they hate believers and if that's the case then we're going to do something that they really won't like, we're going to pray for them.

The PM from 'sementub' was definitely in a Cyrillic language and he has been banned now. jrc will have to ban the IP address as he is the only admin still onboard. An odd thing about the poster is that the profile didn't contain any web links. From what I've seen, the lack of links is rare.

I marked in private message spammers as "Foes" -- maybe it will help identify them.

Not sure it helps us, Daniel, but it might help younrecognize them if we miss them somehow. Your private message section is inaccessible to Board moderators and admin.

We use a captcha, but it must be outdated as it doesn't seem to staunch the flow of new members obviously not human. I'd say we should work toward updating the board, and soon.

That needs to be done badly, but I'm not sure any of use have the level of access necessary to make that happen. Unless I'm mistaken that has to be done through the host.

At least I have no clue how it's done otherwise or I'd have done it long ago.

But who is admin of the forum? Someone must be? Having an outdated forum script isn't good at all.
Usually the owner of the site updates the script, not the host.

Post subject:  Re: Spammers and lost posts

Susi, apparently we have 3 available site admins right now. I'm a newly promoted (and totally clueless!) one. Connie and jrc are the intelligent ones, although jrc had been the only one for quite some time as the member interaction here fell to nearly nothing, until recently. Just the spam alone swamped him. I think we are now trying to fix things that need fixed but are open for suggestions.

The people who originally set up the board are either deceased (Walden) or not participating now. There is a saying here about being between a rock and a hard place -- that is where PWA has been for a while.

"host" refers to the site where the information is kept rather than a person. Web sites are hosted by companies like Wix or GoDaddy (two of hundreds).

Without access to that host site - or any idea who it is really - we have no way of updating the measures that would prevent unwelcome intrusions.

I think that Dana is the board owner, but that Kitty was the creator of this version of the board website, possibly with some input from Walden.
