Post subject:  Which whistle? II (My Shepherd Will Supply My Need)

Let's have some more fun. I've recorded "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need" with four different A whistles (Abell, Burke composite, O'Riordan, and Water Weasel) all the way through with each whistle. But that clip is too big for me to import on my own (I need a moderators help -- it's on the landing). (These are one time through recordings, so there are a few spots (and so whole clips) that I would have recorded again.)

However, I did cut and paste a clip of the tune using all four whistles, each playing one part of the song (switching at natural breaking points). It's small enough for me to upload myself. So the first test is, can you identify where the breaking points are? The download should allow you to see and give approximate times on the clip.

Other than pasting and clipping, I've only added some amplification (no reverb) so one can hear better. There are some differences in the whistles, but I have to admit, some of them are very hard to distinguish.

Here are all four whistles, each playing the tune one time through:

Happy listening.
The attachment below contains the mix.

I'm 100% sure I'm nowhere near being correct but that's never stopped me before from giving a guess :) I'm thinking the first whistle is the Burke and the last one is the Abell. The middle two I have no idea whatsoever, but after mentally flipping a coin I'm gonna say the second is the Water Weasel.... so I suppose that means I'll have to guess number three is the O"Riordan.

Wow, they are pretty close. Off the top of my head I'd say the second is the Burke and the third is the WW. So just a shot in the dark...the first I'll guess to the the O'Riordan and the last to be the Abell. But truly, if you told me they were all the same whistle, I'd believe you.

I'll try to get some clips up next weekend of more A clips, to add to the fun.

I like 2 the best then 3, then 1 and finally number 4. They are all nice to my ear, but some nicer than others BUT I could not guess which was which. With my back against a wall I would have to say that I think 2 is the Abell because it is the nicest IMO.

Why don't I know this tune? Where is it from?

Blackhawk's and Larry's guesses are on the short mix clip. (Interestingly, not one of the guesses is right. Knowing that might help others guess, if only by process of elimination.)

Thanks to Adrian for putting the longer clip up in the original post. His guesses are on the longer clip. I'm not going to comment yet on whether any of his guesses are right or wrong. That would spoil the fun. O:) O:) O:)

Bye for now.

See, I told you I was 100% sure I wasn't correct!

Don't worry, Larry. I'm pretty sure that, even though I played these, if someone cut and pasted them, or if I were away from the tunes for a while and someone switched the order, I'd have a difficult time guessing which was which.

Adrian, I only assumed that your comments were over the longer version with all four whistles playing the tune through individually. Do I have that right there?

Hmmm. Could it be: Water Weasel, Abell, Burke, O'riordan ?
Yes this is a guess, and if I get to pick a favorite it would be #3. To me it has a lovely bright voice and sweet tone.

Tom,

Are you guessing on the long clip? (I ask because it will make a difference as to what you got right or wrong.)

The tune comes from the Southern Harmony collection. General Info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Harmony
Link to online collection with midis and mp3s (slight variation in midi tune there compared to how I've heard it): http://www.ccel.org/ccel/walker/harmony ... rmony.html
The tune name is "Resignation" -- I've only heard it used with the hymn "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need" but I'll bet it's used with others as well.

Cool playing, Keith .... it's educational to hear that the whistles are not so very different sounding in recordings. Your "tests" here put an interesting twist how a whistle sounds in person (ie. you & your wife can tell which whistle is which) and the near sameness of the whistles in a recording. (More in the shorter clip than the long.)

My guesses (from the longer clip):

1. Water Weasel
2. Abell
3. Burke Composite
4. O'Riordan

edited: Wow ... just noticed that TC & I match on guesses.

If this were baseball, I'd be pitching perfect strikes so far. Nobody has guessed correctly on any of the whistles. I'm very surprised and I'm sure you will be when I tell you the answers. But I'm going to be teasingly mean (in a nice way) and wait a day or two.

Maybe I'll try this with the Low D whistles on another tune next week. I like playing the tunes and it's sort of fun to guess.

Blackhawk, do you still have time to post your A whistles clip? If you get time, it would be fun. But, of course, this should be low on the list of important things to do.

I'm really enjoying this! I have recorded 2 clips, but my third A whistle is out on loan at the moment. I should have it back in a few days, if you all don't mind waiting. I think it'd be fun to throw the third one into the mix. I can add a little variety, too, since I just picked up an Overton A. Also Tommy is making me an A whistle, so I can throw a 4th one in. Once I get those last 2 whistles, it will just take a moment to record 2 more clips and then I'll post them.

Yes, the full length version.
I'm still having fun either way, but did I guess any correctly ?

Your guesses and Blackhawk's were the same, so still no correct answer.

Okay -- another shot on the long clip ... 1) O'Riordan 2) Water Weasel 3) Abell 4) Burke :?:

Wonder how much our computer speakers are messing with the sound quality of the whistles?

No doubt the speakers have something to do with it, as does the logitech microphone I record with. Plus it's probably true that (if whistles are of fairly similar tone/sound/quality/) the person playing will tend to play/sound the same. But I think you'll hear clear differences with the Low D whistles when I get to them. When I go back and listen to the long track, the one that stands out in volume and somewhat in tone from the others is #3. Is that the same for the rest of you? Just curious.

By the way, Judy, you got one of the whistles right. =D> =D> =D> =D> But I'm going to be rascally still and not tell everybody which one until later today or tomorrow.

The thing your four whistles have in common is that they all sound very nice. However, they each have a distinct tone and certainly do not sound the same to my ear. I'm very keen to learn which is which as it might affect my next whistle order!

Adrian if you go to this page, you can hear the Abell A play "The King of Love My Shepherd Is": http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/2788/audio.php And if you go to this page you can hear the Water Weasel play "O the deep deep love of Jesus": http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/2788/audio.php?p=6 That might help you and others guess by comparison.

O.k. this time, how about:

1-O'Riordan
2-Burke Comp.
3-Abel
4- Water Weasel

 Bummer, I find it disappointing that the O'Riordan was right. # 1 whistle was my least favorite. Didn't seem exactly "friendly" in the 2nd octave to my ear ....
