If I transpose the key of Ab to the key D what notes do they become? Or will Ab traspose better to the key of G?

You can transpose to either key.

To transpose Ab to G, simply lower each note by one half step (or semi-tone).

To transpose Ab to D, lower each note by 6 half steps. (Coincidentally, the keys of Ab and D are an equal number of semi-tones apart in either direction, so you could go up or down by 6 to transpose.)

Let me know if you need more than this to get you going.

How did it go Tommy? Did you transpose your tune already.

I would think that transposing from Ab to G would be easier as it is only half a step, as Kitty said.

One approach is to treat the key change as you would a substitution code. Just write the scale you want to transpose from over the scale you want to transpose to and just substitute the old note in the top line for the new note below it in the lower line. e.g. transposing Ab - G

Ab - Bb - C - Db - Eb -- F - G
G -- A -- B -- C -- D -- E -- F#

Thank you Kitty, and Adrian for your help. I am now able to transpose the Ab music to D.
