Hi,
could have posted this on the big board but i like the people here better:) must be that Jesus thing ;)

someone at school asked me to play on a small recital to celbrate St. Patrick's day.

2 tunes, Glasgow Reel and Screw the Nut are both in Dm. What whistle do I need to use? an F whistle?

went to the C&F website to look at their whistle chart

I have a dixon low F whistle but not sure that's gonna cut thru an accordian, violin and a dancer.

suggestions?

thanks,
Kim

It depends upon the mode you need.

A C whistle will play the D dorian mode (the scale starts on Re), the D Aeolian would need a B whistle, I think.

Yep, C will probably do it for you, depending on the tune of course.

So where ya been?

C whistle for Dorian mode, F for pure minor.

It would indeed depend on the song - I'm with the group here, I'd start with the C.

where have I been you ask?

ahh it's nice to be remembered. Welllll some of you remember that I bought a ton of whistles last fall because I wanted to start playing whistle in my christian band.

so, after about $500 or more later....I have a nice collection of whistles....sitting in my closet!

I quit my secretary job at a church to go back to school full time in order to obtain a teaching license. I want to be a school band director.

So, this semester I have 19 credit hrs., class every day at 8 a.m. then I teach lessons from 4-8 most days. I have 25 students right now. I also coach a woodwind trio at a local high school. Then I take musical theater gigs, or any gig, as they come.

Next week I sub with the Firelands Symphony out in SAndusky Ohio. We are doing RAchmaninoff's 3rd piano concerto and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. The STravinsky is VERY hard as I played it back in college...13 yrs. ago. Problem is, I haven't started practicing the part yet and rehearsals are next week!!!! so, I'm just a weee bit stressed.

At school, one of my classmates is an undergrad music major and she is the most Irish person I've ever met. I think she wears an Irish shirt or sweatshirt every day. She plays accordian and dances in Irish dance competitions. At school we have departmental recitals every Thursday and when I told her I've been meaning to get into whistle playing, she asked if I would play along on a few tunes. Her sister is coming in to dance. So there you have it...that's about what is going on in my world....it's alot!

I use a C whistle both for D Dorian and for Dm (natural minor). The D natural minor needs the flatted 6th added to the Dorian mode (which already has the flatted 3rd and 7th). This is easy peasy on a C whistle as it is 0XX000

Dm (natural minor) on a C whistle is:

X X X X X 0 X X
X X X X 0 X X X
X X X 0 0 X X X
X X 0 0 0 0 X X
X 0 0 0 0 0 X X
0 0 0 0 0 0 X 0
