Sorry for your injury; that rules out C and C# (on the soprano.) (Adrian has likely already mentioned that you don't need your right little finger pad to play the whistle.) I pray that you heal quickly!

Susan, that's gotta hurt. :( Sarah says tell you she's saying a special prayer for you tonight.

Sorry for the injury .. hope it heals quickly. Am thinking that a woman with such an injury shouldn't be' cleaning or cooking ... and that Adrian should step up and fill the void!

Ouch! You have my sympathy and prayers, Susan!

.... I always suspected running was dangerous and to be avoided .....

Susan has been a runner since we met in 1982. She is not a marathon runner and 20 miles has been about her maximum although an hour is enough now as she had a few injuries. She is also a keen swimmer and although she is not fast she is quite comfortable swimming up to two miles. We won't even start on how long she can play the recorder without a break!!!

I tried to get her playing the whistle but she soon gave up as she can play in every key on the alto recorder other than F and F# without needing her pinkie. She spent an hour or so yesterday transposing all her F tunes up to G so she can still play them!

That stinks.

How long is that monstrosity gonna be there? Maybe a smaller splint would accomodate playing?

Sorry for your pain - both physically and musically.

Thank you for all your replies about my finger. I hurt it a month ago when I tripped while out running and landed heavily on the finger. I did nothing for a month but as it was still swollen and sore I decided to get a splint.

As Adrian explained I can play down to G and can also manage low Bb, but not low F and F sharp. However, in cold weather the finger aches so I don't play so much in the early mornings in the wood in the village where I do research. The tenor recorder is also harder to play now when using my right hand.

This is the smallest splint I was shown in the medical supplies shop although they had another one I didn't see for €38! I shouldn't really use my little finger too much in playing anyway as it does hurt a bit.

Thank you for all those who said they were praying.

On a positive note I've found out about another aspect of folk Islam and healing, which involves going to see a mother of twins. She steps on the part that needs healing three times (gently I'm told!) and prays.

I'm not sure how long I'll wear the splint - until the swelling goes down. I read on the internet that you normally wear a splint for a broken finger for a month, but I didn't wear one straight away so I don't know how long.

Susan,

I'm so sorry to see your poor finger looking like that. :( I will pray that it heals quickly.

I've always thought it was dangerous to run and play recorder at the same time. Now I have proof! Seriously, though, I hope it gets better soon. And hey, if you were here, I'd step gently on your finger and pray for it (I happen to look somewhat like a pregnant mother of twins ... perhaps I should take up running ... but without the recorder. )
