I our backyard we have Apple-Banana trees. Apple-Bananas are smaller and a tad more tart than regular bananas. Once you've had them, the regular kind seem bland. Here are pictures I took this afternoon:
Image
The vines spreading on the grass to the left are from our Lilikoi (passion fruit) bushes.

There are currently three bunches of bananas growing on three trees and they're in various stages of development. Here's some at about the early/midway stage:
Image

Here's some (and this is the crucial thing) that are approaching being ready to harvest in the next few weeks. The whole tree has to be cut down because it 'dies' and does not produce fruit again.
Image
(I just noticed you can see avocados from the neighbor's tree in the picture.)

Anyway, Blackhawk is going to visit here in early August. The last pictured group could well be ripe and ready to eat right at the time he visits. They could ripen a bit earlier, and if so I'll simply have to buy some locally. But I hope we get these from the tree because they are superb -- kind of like the difference between home-grown tomatoes and store-bought. I hear Blackhawk doesn't eat chocolate. Here's hoping he likes bananas. (And maybe some of the neighbor's avocados.) :-'

Ah, Les . . . are you being tempted? I hope so. If you ever travel from your island to ours, my wife and I would welcome you -- and we'd be sure to have good apple-bananas, and papayas, and so on. We've got a small guest room, private bath, etc. We can even provide our own home-style entertainment. And since our weak efforts at entertainment are not likely to be as high-quality as you might want, the Polynesian Cultural Center is within a mile of our townhouse: http://www.polynesia.com

Come to Hawaii.

we just returned from our sons wedding in puerto rico . . . your pictures remind me of the lush fruit (mangos, limes, bananas) we experienced there.

we especially enjoyed fried plantains and coconuts . . . of course we had to put da lime in da coconut . . .

God's world is beautiful!

I learned to love fried plantains when I was in Peru. Truly wonderful.

Do I remember right, that you are coming to the Islands in February? If so, let me know where, what, when, etc. It would be great to meet up with you.

(Of course, before you make any plans, you may want to wait and see if Blackhawk makes it off the islands safe and sane first. 8) )

Jim and Judy! Looks like you both need 'time out.' Now stop teasing Blackhawk and go to your rooms and record another tune.

Or even better, I could rename the thread "Blackhawk's Bananas" and leave people wondering exactly what the apostrophe means -- is it possessive or is it simply a contraction of is?

Okay, Okay. I'm going to my time out place and recording a tune.

I see, you must have followed the link on my signature. I didn't think I'd played any tunes on the bananas.

The first tune played there is on a Dixon (ABS) Low D.

(So when are you coming to Hawaii, Les? :) )

Word is getting around that Blackhawk is coming to Hawaii. Local reaction has been mixed:

A little over a week until Blackhawk makes his landing in Hawaii. The Bananas are not yet ripe, so they may turn just in time.

By the way, the motorcade is ready:

Keith, I'm deeply humbled by your preparations.

You got me a parade, and I didn't get you anything. :(

One week from tomorrow, buddy! :)

The motorcade has fallen through, because there's a strike. The riders wanted real helmets and not hats, but the bosses haven't cooperated. I'm afraid you'll have to simply ride in my car.

Also sorry to say that the Apple-Bananas on our tree haven't ripened yet. There's still a chance that a couple of them will ripen by the time you get here Saturday, but I'm not counting on it. I'll get some locally.

Despite all this, I think you'll like it here (on the way to my house, 35-40 minutes north of this view):

Well, after hearing that the motorcade was cancelled, I was going to call off the trip, but that view just might be worth it.

Keith,

I am really impressed with your total disregard for personal pleasures in your willingness to improve the minds of the young ones. To live in such primative conditions must really be hard! :D
