A new computer is coming with Susan for our work here.

How good is open office? Would it be good enough for the needs of a small mission base or do we have to get Microsoft Office again?

VERY IMPORTANT Can Open Office open MS Word documents? [-o<

I've used Open Office for about a year now and I think it's great. It has no problem opening microsoft documents.

I've used the word processor and Impress, which is the Powerpoint substitue and both work very well. The database program is kind of odd, but I really haven't spent much time with it, or any of the rest of the program for that matter. If you're going to present it to folks using Microsoft software, watch the "Save As" option to be sure you pick the proper extension, e.g. .ppt or .doc, etc.

I have been using it on my Laptop with Vista. I find no fault with this program. It not only opens Word documents it also opens WordPerfect documents. However you cannot save a document in WordPerfect format.

Open Office Writer can, indeed, both save to MS Word format and open MS Word documents. You'll get all of the words and most of the formatting; some things might get a little messed up in translating back and forth. When my wife sent some things which were typed in Open Office to someone who opened them in Word, the pages were not identical, and they had trouble communicating about where certain words/sentences were located in the paper.

That said, I've used the word processor and spreadsheet functions quite a bit over the last two plus years, and they've been more than adequate for my needs.

Edited to add: Microsoft also offers "Word Viewer', which enables you to open Word files as they were originally formatted. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

Open Office will also export to PDF from any of its modules.
