I hope to have some time when I get home. We are in Lumberton, NC tonight. Home tomorrow sometime. Picked up some Russell Stover today. I like the triple chocolate mousse private reserve with 70% cacao.

I found a version of this in one of our hymn books and it's in the key of Eb. Just for laughs I played in on my Eb whistle. So ... so .. so many hi Ebs...  The cats complained and ran away...

I find the lyrics of this hymn incredibly rich. Here's a link to the story of the hymn.

And another.

Here's a new version from me - for comparison I used a Clarke Original D, the a Dixon Trad D.

jrc,

So far I've just listened to it fairly low (didn't want to disturb other patrons at the coffee shop), but what I heard sounded heavenly. :D

Beautiful, Jim! You really make those inexpensive whistles sing. It makes me wonder why I ever paid more than $20 for a whistle!

Thanks guys - thought it might be interesting to so an a/b comparison with the two.

The Clarke is still my favorite - you can play much longer phrases with the Trad, but the tone isn't as rich, IMO.

Both versions are cool!

Ren, you always do such a nifty job of building a tune, instrument by instrument.

jrc, great as always. I have to agree on the Clarke over the Trad .... which surprises me. When playing my Clarke or Trad, I thought the Trad was the smoother, richer tone. Your song shows the Clarke definitely has the richer tone -- cool! 8)

Sidenote: The mp3 player wouldn't load more than 30 seconds for either song for me, yet I could download both and listen through Quiktime or WMP.

I have not heard anyone play the Clarke as well as you and you are the absolute master of them! I, on the other hand, cannot play a Clarke at all and when I try it always sounds dreadful - and I mean terrible.

Bad decision to follow the Clarke with the Dixon IMO. The Clarke sounded like the cream of the cream and the Dixon sounded plain and uninteresting in comparison even though you played it very well.

I think it might be that us lesser mortals need all the help we can get from nice sounding, easy to play instruments, I know I do! The exception is the Gen Bb, of course, it sings beautifully on its own without help from anyone.

I did it precisely for that comparison, just to see if the Dixon was as thin as I thought is was. the intonation on the Dixon is really nice, but the overtones in the Clarke are just too cool. You should hear the difference on my studio speakers - it's really astounding.

Nice job, both of you! =D>

jrc - I'm shocked at the difference between the clarke and the dixon trad. I just got a dixon trad for Christmas, and thought it sounded wonderful. I think I may have to get a clarke original with the rest of my Christmas money!

Thanks Shan - but be forewarned; the Clarke requires a lot more air than the Trad.
