I've known about using a paper clip as a whistle mute for longer than I care to remember, but just in the past few days I've realized that I've been using the paper clip in the wrong way. I never in the past had any success with the technique - I was simply standing it straight up and down! ](*,) Now that I discovered you're supposed to angle the paper clip, it actually does work! :D That is the proper way to use the paper clip, isn't it? :-k

Not a technique that I often use as I am a bit paranoid about damaging the blade edge. You are quite right that it works. I lean mine from the base of the fipple against the blade.

Thanks, Adrian. Hmmm, never thought of causing any damage. I must be "vewy, vewy careful" to quote Elmer Fudd.

Yes, Larry, it works. I use it a lot. It is as Adrian said......you angle it with the top leaning on the base of the fipple, with the bottom angled down towards the foot. The paperclip has to be touching the blade to work. As an extra precautionary step, I use the vynal or plastic-coated paperclips. :D

You know, I've never been much with the technical intricacies of a whistle, so now I'm a wee bit confused (what else is new?). I always thought the fipple was the "mouthpiece" of the whistle? So, pray tell, where is the base of the fipple? And the foot? And if that's not enough questions for you, where is the blade? All in basic lay-person's terms, if you please. So, is the top of the paper clip angling towards me as I play, and the bottom slanted in the direction of the tone holes? I'm so confused!!!

The fipple is actually the plug in the end of the whistle head. You dont' think of this with the molded plastic since it is all one piece but look at a Clarke original or a Shaw. The wooden plug is the fipple. There is a diagram on one of the web sites that shows the parts of a whistle but I forget where it is. I am sure someone will have a reference.

You got it right, Larry. The top of the paperclip angling towards you and the bottom of it angling towards the tone holes. The end opposite the mouthpiece is the foot. :D See, that wasn't so bad.

So, how do you get the clip in there and what holds it in place? Muting is a new concept to me.....

Hi, springrobin. BTW, welcome to the board. Glad you're here. Feel free to introduce yourself, if you like. What instruments do you play? Do you have pennywhistles? What kind? All that sort of thing.

You can slide it right in the hole on the top. Then, since you generally want to mute at times when you're alone (like when others are sleeping), any kind of light taping might do the trick. A scotch transparent tape or something like that.

How do others handle that?

How to use the paper clip is explained above. See Adrian's and/or Lyn's posts.

Guess I'll just have to try it. Most of my whistles have curved windways but maybe a small clip would go in.

Oh no, no. You dont' put it where you blow, you put it in the the square-ish hole, above the highest round hole. It's the first hole from where you put your mouth. I found a picture, but can't get it to here. I have to email it from My Pictures, in it's own email box. All I need is your email address, and I'll email it to you.

Oh, you put it in the window? That makes more sense. So it has to, oh maybe a picture will say it all, if you can send it, that would be great. My e-mail is springrobin at comcast dot net.

Thanks!

PLEASE DON'T TRY TO PUT IT IN THE SAME HOLE WHERE YOU BLOW - YOU COULD INHALE THE PAPERCLIP.

Try looking here:

Now I get it! That's waaaay too easy. Even simple concepts can be confusing when you try to describe them in words. From previous descriptions, I was imagining a clip levitating at an angle inside the tube. Thanks for the pic!
