Okay, well, that didn't work out.

I was going to install Linux on this external hard drive I got for Christmas, but when I plugged it in it didn't come on, AND I started smelling this burnt circuitry smell. You know the one, I'll bet.

So...can anybody tell me how to partition a hard drive? :-'

I used a program from Acronis - I think it was Disk Manager. Worked great.

So sorry for the fried drive. However I didn't want to hear this as I just bought an external drive for backup yesterday. As soon as I tried to backup my whole system I found out it doesn't work with FAT 32 files. I had to convert to NTFS in order to do it. I said a little prayer and typed the command into the command prompt and pressed the enter button. It worked. I didn't lose anything. Now I am trying to back up the system.

I think the main problem with my xternal was it was cheap. It also did not have an ac adapter like you get with a good laptop cord. I think maybe it got fried by unregulated incoming current.

I bought a Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus 250 GB for $89.95. It works well now. I bought it because of the advertised Safety Drill sw that came with it. It will store a disk image of your system disk or at least it is supposed to. It didn't. It would go about 77% (about 6 hours) and then just stop, no error messages nothing. I did some research. I was not the only one to have this problem. One person said the answer was to download Disk Wizard from the Seagate site (Seagate owns Maxtor). I downloaded Disk Wizard and guess what it says powered by Acronis. I now have a disk image and my second drive is in process of storing my files. I checked my one picture file. It had 7003 files at 8 GBs.

My second hard disk is Maxtor. I don't do direct backups, just store all my files there. I've had no trouble with it. However, hard drives go bad, period. So I'm getting another external when I can.

partition magic will partition and already formated drive. Defrag the drive first though.

I have gotten the nice burnt smell and even puffs of smoke serveral times of late with older drives. It is quite depressing heh

You might take the usb drive assembly apart and see if the drive is an IDE or SATA drive.

It may be OK and hopefully, just the interface has been smoked. If so, you can install the drive in a desktop computer. That is what happened to mine (an IDE drive) and I am still using the drive. I tossed the interface and haven't tried another USB interface. I think USB is just too slow compared to IDE and SATA.

I think you can use the computer management console in XP to partition your drives and not lose any information.

This posting, Dual Boot Ubuntu and Windows might be of help.

To get your multimedia up and running, I used this guide, Comprehensive Multimedia & Video How-to and I haven't had a reason to boot Windows XP Home edition ever since.

I am eying my Windows partition as being useless and I am thinking I could better use it for more music storage..
