I was just thinking the same thing. Maybe we ought to put this in the fellowship area for those who haven't visited here in some time.

Some of us may not post here very often but that doesn't mean we don't visit.

The books should all be dusted off. Time to start playing.

(Please.)

Given the level of participation in TPE over the last few months, I really wonder how this year's Christmas project will pan out. There are a few songs in practice here at the moment, however.

Gee, I'm driving my husband crazy. I've been playing Christmas carols for about a month, now.

Hymns only or secular as well? Does Frosty rate a showing? ;)

FWIW, I was planning to do "O Tannenbaum" and "The Boar's Head Carol", both public-domain secular carols.

I don't know the copyright status of Frosty, but as far as I know it's OK to put your rendition of a non-PD tune on-line if you have to be a registered user to access the site. However, that's up to the mods. I'd sure hate to see us shut down over something like that.

As for me, I'm not going to post any non-PD stuff. When in doubt, don't.

Some drinking songs are whistle friendly and have a very nice beat!

Some of our best hymns got their starts as drinking songs.

Which of our best hymns started as drinking songs?

Maybe this will clear things up a bit:

http://www.gbod.org/worship/default.asp ... em_id=2639

So is it OK to do "O Little Town of Bethlehem" to the tune of "House of the Rising Sun"? :-k

I think we'll probably never know the true story about hymns using the tunes of "bar songs" or bar form songs (which sounds a little far-fetched to me, but it's as plausible as anything else I've heard).

**** thread hijack alert*****

The Star Spangled Banner was written to a drinking song ... not a hymn, but an anthem.

Hmm. I've never heard this explanation before. I'll have to look into it.

While some of our hymns did come from secular popular songs of the time there is some ambiguity as to whether drinking songs were actually used. Most of the articles I have read(like the ones posted above) have been unable to find concrete evidence of bar songs used. Secular popular tunes yes but not actual drinking songs heh.

Thought I'd heard something about another hymn-writer, William Booth. Don't know whether "tavern-room ballads" are classified as drinking songs, nor do I know the accuracy of this article: http://ctlibrary.com/ch/1990/issue26/2630.html

Well, you'd probably be hard put to find a secular song somebody hasn't sung while drinking. ;)

And probably more than a few hymns.
