Okay, on second thought, it looks like Jim kindly took the time to put everybody's songs in his fileden account so we could post links to it. Thanks, Jim!

Three quickly recorded clips led to some discoveries:

First, a microphone that works on a Windows XP computer doesn't always work properly on Vista -- or I haven't figured it out yet. :? ](*,) #-o
Second, my new laptop microphone does a fairly decent recording job in a pinch. (2 of the 3 were recorded through the computer mike -- can you tell which ones?)
Third, when I tried to access the Christmas 2008 folder it was empty.
Fourth, even though all 3 clips are under the 2 MB limit, I couldn't get them to upload on TPE. (Maybe it's a hint? :-k  )

All simple dulcimer versions:

1. On Christmas Night

2. Sing We Now of Christmas

3. What Child is This?

Judy, I'm SORRY you had such a frustrating experience. With Kitty gone, I don't know who to ask for help.

I'm not sure why they appeared gone when you were trying to upload. They appear to be back now.

Don't know what the deal was, but your 4shared is working great, and "On Christmas Night" sounds GREAT. Your dulcimer skills are excellent.

Connie, everything is showing up in the Christmas folder for me now. I think it was just one of those nights. Cyber gremlins were busy. :)

Tell Josh his "O Come O Come Emmanuel" is great! Wish I could improvise like he does. =D>

Judy those were all super - I really liked Sing We Now. I never heard that tune before.

One question - there's a difference in tone on the dulcimer going from Sing We Now to What Child. Is that by design? There's something about the tone on Sing We Now that really appeals to me, but I tend to prefer darker sounds over brighter ones - just my preference. Different technique, or micing?

Well done =D> - those were way cool.

Sing We now is a great tune. And this is a great version.

Anyone played the hammered dulcimer? you guys play the lap version correct? Do you use one flat pick or fingerpicks?

Thanks, guys! :)

Shadoes, Ren plays the hammered dulcimer as well as the mountain (lap) dulcimer. Think all of his selections contained both ... well maybe not In Dulcimer Jubilo. I usually play with a flat pick -- worked some with finger picks. That's a slow learning process for me.

Jim C., all three of the carols were played on different dulcimers. Sing We Now of Christmas was a Simerman walnut dulcimer restrung to use as a baritone. (I love the lower tones of it!) What Child is This? was a Prussia Valley baritone dulcimer I just got a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, the previous owner hadn't played it very much so the tone isn't quite what it should be yet. On Christmas Night was recorded using a Laurel Mountain mini dulcimer. Each dulcimer definitely has it's own voice. One thing that made a difference in the recordings (other than the different dulcimers) was that What Child is This was recorded using a plug 'n play mike that really wasn't working well. The other 2 were recorded using the built in mike on my laptop. It's an issue I need to resolve before recording much else. Did one recording of We Three Kings using the built-in mike and got a muffled, dead spot. Just wasn't my year for things working ....

Judy, you are correct. IDJ contains only a mountain dulcimer, but the others contain both.

To record the hammered dulcimer, I put a condenser mic up inside the hand-hole and used padded hammers. I also used some separation and delay in the final mix to somewhat soften the hammer attacks.

On the mountain dulcimer, I strum with a flatpick (black .88 Brain Pick in these recordings), but all of the melody and chord/melody stuff is done with the thumb and fingertips rather than finger picks or fingernails.

Hopefully this helps.

jrc, I went to burn a Christmas CD for my car for this year, and I can't find my all time favorite piece of music, your version of O Come, O Come Emmanuel. Any chance you can show me where to download it? Thanks, bro!

You can get it here:

http://c1.ezfolk.com/Jim_Clendenen/

sorry you have to click through all that stuff. I'll see if I can find an mp3 somewhere of it. Don't know if I kept one. Go to the "Songs" tabs and eventually it'll come up; it's on page 4 of 6. We can try this:

Glad you're diggin it! thanks!

No, thank YOU, bro! That tuneful version of that song has more beauty than any other I have ever heard. I force myself to not listen to it except between Dec 1 and Dec 26 each year, so I never tire of it.
