I started to plunk this out in Finale for you, then remembered it was on Whistle and Squeak, so here it is:

The pdf:
http://www.geocities.com/whistleandsque ... usLove.pdf

The midi:
http://www.geocities.com/whistleandsque ... usLove.mid

This tune, as far as I know, first appeared in William Walker's Southern Harmony, 1835. The text, as it appears on Mark Bell's pdf, is an early American folk hymn.

Arrange the hymn YOUR way. Even if you don't feel like you're any good at it, please play for us ANYWAY! We're whistle hounds, lots of us, and we want to hear you play!!!

There's a good tutorial on recording here:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1066

Please make sure your final piece is in mp3 format. If your mp3 is under 2mb, use the attachment uploader (browse box, add the file box) that appears at the bottom of your post screen.

If your mp3 is over 2 mb, here's what you do:
Quote:
To use Internet Explorer: Just open your browser and type the location.
location: ftp://praisewhistlers.org

Use this username and password:

user name: pwatunes
password: mystyle

Then on the right hand side of your browser you'll find a drop down menu called "Page." Drop the menu and click "Open ftp site in Windows Explorer." You may have to re-enter your password. Then drag your file from My Computer into the browser window and the file will transfer (does not work with FireFox). [Sorry, you Mac users are on your own.]

use songtitle_screenname
No spaces or punctuation, please. Lower case, please.

So for example I would place my file as amazinggrace_shadoes.mp3
That way when others posted their Amazing Grace files it would not overwrite mine or anyone elses as the file names would be unique.

After you upload your file please PM that you did giving the file name you uploaded. It will then be added to the relevant thread for discussion. Right now we’re sending PMs to Connies, Adrian or to Shadoes.

Of course, if you already have an mp3 file storage account (EZFolk, Fileden, ect.), feel free to upload your tune there and link to it here so we can enjoy it.

Have fun!!!

Here's my take on it from a year or so ago:
http://ezfolk.com/audio/index.php?t=pla ... g_id=10765
I think this was on an Abell C blackwood. I'm not at home to compare, but I think I'm remembering correctly.

I will try to do another version soon.

Time to blow the dust out of the old organ and fire it up again.

Here's one ... I may do another, this is pretty generic.

Keith, love your playing. Love your nice whistles. Thanks for starting us off with a really nice version.

jrc....well, if that's generic, I can't wait to hear what happens when you really rip into it. Very nice.

Really enjoyed both of these selections ... this is one song that I had never heard before hearing it on PWA. =D> =D>

Ah, Dorian mode. That's why it's so soothing.

Beautiful, as we have always come to expect from you. You have perfected this style so I think it is time you took it up a notch and added more. For example, you have been blessed with a wonderful voice so a version with you singing and showing us how you would add whistle would be both delightful to the ear and a great model for the rest of us.

Thanks Adrian - I agree - there's more to this song than what I got out of it, but having insisted on continuing I felt I should at least respond quickly after Connie posted it.

I've an idea on another song for vocals - I don't think this one is a good fit for me vocally, but I have one I wrote, and a second that's an old hymn I may post. The original is a kinda gospel blues song based on I Peter 1:8. I don't think it's a whistle song. Possibly I can get to them this weekend - they've been on my to-do list a while.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words, support and advice. This board is such a blessing.

Jim

I had never heard of this song .. and I just began to play it ... and the more I play it the more I like it ... it grabs hold of me like no song I have played recently ... I find my self humming it .. thinking of it ... and reaching for a whistle to play it again and again. His wondrous love is amazing isn't it? I believe that is a big part of this song for me ... it makes me think on His love ... wow .. what a love. How blessed we are.

This is me doing a hammered dulcimer "duet" with myself.

http://ezfolk.com/audio/download.php?mo ... g_id=17882

On the background I used padded hammers and on the melody I used brass-bottom hammers.

Here's my more recent version. Low D with a bit of reverb.

Jim and Jim: I like your versions of the tune. JRC has such a unique sound--always enjoyable. Jim E., I was moved by your version--really touching.

Now if we can get Jim W to record his version.

Very much liked the versions posted thus far. I was not familiar with this one and like Jim it kind of got stuck in my head once I started plaiying it on the whistle. I couldn't exactly get the rhythm I was hearing, but this is what happened to it once it came out :
http://www.box.net/shared/zym3sd6amf
a flute and guitar version.

TC,

I enjoyed listening to your take on this, and envy someone who can both play both guitar and whistle (or who has someone who'll play guitar along with you.) What kind of whistle did you use?

Well done guys - several different ideas floating around. COOL!

It's really interesting to see where everyone goes with this ... it's kind of an odd song, in a good way.

Thanks Keith . Actually, not a whistle but a Billy Miller bamboo flute. I'm accompanying myself on acoustic guitar.

JRC - "Southern Harmony" ? Wasn't sure exactly what this would mean. I don't think much of it is showing up here. I tried a version with vocals but it sounded like a bad Johnny Cash impersonation.

My first clip posting in TPE. From my soon-to-be 'first cd.' :joker: (More on that later.)

Want you to guess the instrument. (It may be a surprise.) This was recorded in my mobile studio. (More on that later, also.)

Jim, that's fantastic! Where you been!? Glad to hear your first post.

What instrument? Hmm. Sounds a bit like a recorder. Too much resonance for an ocarina. But it shoots up into the second octave like a whistle. I dunno. Stumped.

Yep, very nicely played Jim. =D> Sounds more like a whistle than a recorder to me.

=D> Oh, that's wonderful, Jim! A great "first"!

As an off-the-wall guess .... a Native American flute?

CD? Mobile studio? Those both sound interesting .... more info. please.
