So it's only October. Fine. I'm anxious for Christmas music and maybe you are also.

Once a week, from now till Christmas, I'm going to post a link to a Christmas tune on youtube--and perhaps a few more as we get closer to the time. (You're welcome to add links as well if you'd like). I'll try to find both interesting songs AND interesting video, but the songs will take priority.

Here's the first of the Season "Down in Yon Forest" sung by Joan Baez. (The video pictures themselves are not all that interesting here, but I love the tune and the way she interprets it.)

Down in Yon Forest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo4-bOxI_fg

The album this appears on is really nice, by the way.

[Moderators: If this is a bad idea or if it's problem in any way, please let me know, feel free to delete this, etc.]

Next week--something Irish, old but new.

What a good idea.

Gaudete is one of our favourites. This version is by Steeleye Span.

My most favorite Christmas song of all time is Christmas in the Trenches, by John McCutcheon.

Here is another old fav of mine that is a reminder that Chrismas is not about food and drink. It is 'The Christmas Song' by Ian Anderson who plays flute and mandolin on this song. The lyrics are below in case you can't make them out on the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zm9RmfN ... re=related

'The Christmas Song'

Once in Royal David’s City stood a lowly cattle shed,
where a mother laid her baby.
You’d do well to remember the things He later said.
When you’re stuffing yourselves at the Christmas parties,
you’ll laugh when I tell you to take a running jump.
You’re missing the point I’m sure does not need making;
that Christmas spirit is not what you drink.

So how can you laugh when your own mother’s hungry
and how can you smile when the reasons for smiling are wrong?
And if I messed up your thoughtless pleasures,
remember, if you wish, this is just a Christmas song.

One of my favorites is Kathy Mattea's version of Christ Child Lullaby. A little recorder action in this one.

Cliff Richard has been an iconic pop star in the UK for decades now. He has been VERY upfront about his faith during his long career. This was one of his Christmas & New Year songs. The tune is a well known Celtic one, 'Auld Lang Syne'.

First by Kathleen Battle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p82ms21Rc4Q

Then a version by a small ensemble with a soloist (also a recorder!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylN8iXUCrS0

And lastly, a group of school children singing their hearts out (most of the time): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s9TMaTjjlE

Cantique de Noel by Joan Baez

I like versions of this by strong (operatic) voices like Domingo or Pavarotti, but the simplicity of this more folk song version is probably my favorite.

One I'd never heard before:

The Shepherd's Carol written by Bob Chilcott:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8N2YTikOsc

We stood on the hills, Lady,
Our day’s work done,
Watching the frosted meadows
That winter had won.

The evening was calm, Lady,
The air so still,
Silence more lovely than music
Folded the hill.

There was a star, Lady,
Shone in the night,
Larger than Venus it was
And bright, so bright.

Oh, a voice from the sky, Lady,
It seemed to us then
Telling of God being born
In the world of men.

And so we have come,Lady,
Our day’s work done,
Our love, our hopes, ourselves
We give to your son.
