Just got a Dixon A and a Dixon G, trying to figure out what songs to play on them. I'm curious, do most of you transpose songs into the key of your whistle (or an easy key for it), or do you find songs already suited to the whistle? Currently the only book I have of ITM is formatted for a D whistle. I'd love any tips and pointers you guys have.

If you're playing from a D book, just pretend it's a D whistle.

If I'm playing alone I just pretend it's a D whistle. With a group I pick whichever whistle works with the key they're playing in.

One of the great things about a whistle is the fingering on a D whistle will serve to play in any key by leaving the music in "D" and the whistle in the needed key. IIRC, this is why the whistle is considered a 'transposing' instrument. I can play a C whistle using the 'proper' fingering, simply because it was so easy to memorize.

I like an A whistle because it matches the baritone mountain dulcimer tuning of A'EA. I use the music in D with both the A whistle & the baritone dulcimer.

Okay, that's what I'd been doing, glad to know it's 'correct'! =)
