Our current Praise Exchange number is "Wonderful Words of Life" (1874). It is one of the many meaningful gospel hymns written by Philip Paul Bliss during the era of the Moody revivals of the last quarter or so of the 19th Century.

Looking forward to hearing your interpretation, whether on whistle or otherwise.

I don't think I've ever heard this one, Aaron ... until listening to your video. Really nice how the song flows on the whistle. Sounds like you play some really nice ornamentation ... or maybe it was just the way the eighth notes ran. Nice in any case!

BTW, what whistle are you playing?

I think I know this one to a different tune. Of course people were always singing hymns to other melodys. Sometimes I think the pianist only knew a couple of tunes and the words were used with whatever she knew. Yes our pianist was always a woman.

This was the tune we always sang it with in our church. It's by the same fellow who wrote the tune of "It Is Well With My Soul" I think. It was he who coined the term gospel music with his series of hymnals under the title "Gospel Hymns."

We always had women pianists too. I think girls are more likely to take piano lessons than boys. On the other hand, it seems like around here a lot more men play stringed instruments (besides piano) than women.

The whistle is a Meg, with the Mel Bay color theme.

I grew up to this song. I can remember my mother singing it at times around the house.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I will try to post a version as time allows.

Thanks walden - keep em coming!
