Looks like we will be doing this hymn for Easter and I will have a chance to play whistle with it. Anyone played a whistle on this tune? I'm thinking a low whistle played much like an air is in order.

Sounds really cool - would love to hear it, if you can record.

Don't think I've ever played anything with this hymn, but love the hymn. Agree that a low whistle would be the choice. I'd also like to hear it, if recording is possible.

Consider this a third vote for a recording, if possible, Randy. 8)

High whistle or low - either will be beautiful.

I was not familiar with this tune prior to reading your post. I then listened to a version on YouTube and found it to be a beautiful hymn. I applaud you for playing it this Sunday. Your congregation will be blessed.

okay, here ya go.

i couldn't decide which instrument to share, so i shared both. The first is a Burke Low C. The second is an Onyx Low D. And I should warn you, I added a couple of measures of improv stuff to help me get in the mood and warm up the whistle. I used garage band on my ipad to record both.

breath control on the burke is challenging....if i'm playing with others, i can usually get away with it. its a big instrument and takes some wind. the onyx is quite abit easier to play.

at least it will give you a gist of the song. wish you guys were here to add some harmony!

=D>

I like both, but the second one just seemed to flow so very nicely. Twas my favorite of the two.

If key isn't an issue, I'd pick the easier whistle to play. ( Will admit I'm lazy! 8) )

Way cool, really dig the vibrato, very nicely done on both whistles.

Of the two (if I were forced to choose) I'd pick the D. I like the way it sounds in the upper register, at least on that tune.

just my .02 cents - ymmv

thank you all for your feedback. it went very well. as it worked out, we did a fernando ortega version of the song. it was in the key of C, so I started on the Burke low C, then switched to a Hi C (on a garry somers whistle), then we had a key change to Eb (thanks to our on tommy, i have a nice low Eb). It worked out well and we ended the service with this piece.

For an old dude who grew up in an acapella only church, I am having way too much fun. Look out for Easter! I'll be helping on several songs.
