 Post subject: Comprehensive list of C fingerings

Hello all,

I've had my whistles just a few days now; haven't had all that much time to spend with them. (mostly waiting on the books so I have something to play) But, what I am figuring out is that nearly every D whistle I have requires a different C natural fingering (I can hear you all chuckle as I type this)

I was wondering, what are the most common C natural fingerings? Is there a comprehensive list somewhere or can we create one? Oooo and if you have certain fingerings that work well on certain whistles, let me know. Like I'm finding that the fingering for C on my Sweetone doesn't work well on one of the other whistles.

I realize this particular point in the scale, the 7th scale degree, is not always a C...it's whatever the 7th note is in that whistle key. Right now I'm just focusing on my D whistles.

Just wondering how you solve this issue...and especially in fast songs...half-holing kinda sucks:)...well depends on the situation as I am finding out...sometimes half holing is good...well, you know what I mean!

So perhaps if you all could give me an idea of fingering options...and perhaps suggestions on which fingering to use in which situations..that would be great.

I'm the least talented whistler on this or any other board, but from all I've heard of Irish playing, they just stick with half holing or 0XX000 and don't worry beyond that. But of course that's on a Generation or Feadog. For more expensive whistles, I'm sure it does matter, especially for playing in church. I think that when you've picked the whistle you're going to play in church, you play the song and figure out which fingering works best on that particular whistle and don't worry beyond that.

:D Just in case that didn't work .... some of the C natural fingerings I've seen:

    xOO OOO (small x=half-hole. Couldn't think of another easy way to type it.)
    OXO OOO
    OXX OOO
    OXX XOO
    OXX XXO (works well on a lot of 'cheapies')
    OXX OXO
I usually use whichever one gives the most pleasing sound to me. If all else fails, get someone to put a C natural thumb hole in a favorite whistle.

You left out one: OXXOXX ;)
Yes, different whistles have different C-Naturals, and some, like my Jubilee Low E, will only dish it out if you half-hole... My Dixon Low D is best half holed, but it's close otherwise, but it's good on slow tunes anyway, so half holing isn't that bad.
Most of my whistles are OXX OOO
My homemade D whistles are OXX OOO but my C is OXO OOO :oops:
One of my whistles is OXX OXX.
I guess that's just life :mrgreen:

In fast songs, I find it easier if I don't half hole, and in some fast songs (particularly the fast ones), it doesn't matter if your Cnatural is a bit off. For slow songs, half holing generally sounds the best if you can do it good, but I usually play OXX OOO or OXO OOO anyway. Hope this helps,

Another useful one is 0XXX0X. I think that was one I learnt from one of Audrey's posts quite a while ago. It works well on some whistles.

It seems to me that the harder you have to "push" your breath to get a whistle into the upper octave (e.g. Dixon A, Kerry Low D, many Clarkes), the fewer fingers it takes to get a good flat seventh. Also, such whistles usually get a better natural seventh if you leave all of your right-hand (left-hand if you're Mary Bergin) fingers down, and not just the pinky.

Yikes! All these whistle and flute fingering options! Still, we are better off than recorder players who have MILLIONS of alternative fingerings. Long live the whistle!
