hmm now that you mention it I might use this as a tune I can memorize for a medieval fair I am part of the cast at in Oct. Was thinking of taking the Obrien maple and playing a tune or two at some point.

Not this time. Maybe someday I can do that and post some video footage (if the Brobdingnagian Bards don't beat me to it). 8)

A first attempt at off-the-cuff harmony in the first round, and a bit of a missed note the second time through -- but I didn't have much time to fix it. Hope its not too bad. :P

That is great Judy. I like it. The G is a nice whistle for those who have thin fingers. I am trying to decide which whistle to record this one with. :D

Very pretty, Judy. I like the high G Gen. It's very well suited to this melody.

Do you know what I mean when I say a piece of whistling tugs at your heart strings? Well, when you slide your low Reyburn, it does just that. Nice!! :thumbsup:

Here is Connie's clip. She writes:

    I started with the piano. I didn't know the tune so I found an old hymnal with the song and copied it note for note to Finale. I liked it so well that I included the Finale piano sound in my version. It starts at verse two.

    Then I used a Burke DAN (D Aluminum Narrow bore) for the melody and second harmony (alto).

    Third harmony (tenor) was on the Susato A Blackhawk gave me. That was the hard part. I couldn't wrap my mind around transposing to the A whistle, so I recorded it one phrase at a time, practicing each phrase over and over and then recording it as a little tiny stand-alone file. Then I patched it all together. It felt a little like cheating, but that's what the big dogs in Nashville do. Hope that's okay. I really did the whole top melody line all at once. It's just the tenor that gave me trouble.

Ok, I'm thinking only one verse is just NOT ENOUGH on this one. I wanted to hear more from both Judy and Connie.

Judy, I really like the combination of high and low whistles. And Connie, the hymn arrangement for the accompaniment really adds a lot.

This tune is sounding nicely medieval. :queen:

it does have a nice medieval sound to it. and I have to second the arguement for more than one verse :) I mean its a hymn..who ever does one verse of a hymn :) :)

And since this topic keeps coming up about how this hymn sounds I did a quik bit of research. The music was written some time in the late 1500s by Nicholas Selnecker. The words by Paul Gerhardt in 1647. So apparently it sounds medieval because.. it is.. or at least close :) more like later part of the mid Renassaince hehehe

Connie, I can't wait to hear the "completed" version! The sample is great. :D (edited --Ooohhh, Kitty was posting even as I wrote this. Downloading the full version now!)

I was working with Finale and trying to do a version with harp added. Didn't have the best of luck with that. The song feels like it calls out for strings, though -- harp, psaltery ... something.

I couldn't resist the Hi G, and dedicate it to Ron & brassblower ... ;) The Reyburn recorded so well, a WhOA fever for Reyburns is developing rapidly.

I'm definitely planning on making a CD of all the TPE songs. The Amazing Grace file is 26:27 minutes (adding in Matt's from the Praise clips); Jesus Paid it All is only 10:53; Sweet Hour of Prayer is 10:57. I hope more versions of all the songs still get posted.

The Reyburn took some getting used to for me as I have short fingers and had to modify my playing grip. On my kerry low D I can use the standard pipers grip but on the reyburn i HAVE to use my pinky to reach the bottom hole hehe. But now that I am use to it I find it difficult to go back to my other low Ds.

I have tried to record on my laptop but the quality is not near as good. So I may wait on this one till my desktop finally makes it journey home.

I hope you have an unpainted one! At least, that is what I understand is traditional at the Civil War reinactments that the band plays for.

Somehow, the painted ones sound better to my ear, and I have to tweak the unpainted ones to be satisfied with them.

The unpainted ones work best when you play in the dark. You can find them easier when you drop them. I have 4 of these in D, JIC
