Why do I catch myself singing about Old King Cole, and his whistlers three when I listen to this song? :P (maybe it's because I've been so saturated with childrens songs for so long.) :)

To misquote Daniel Boone, "It is a poor man that plays a tune the same way twice". I often find myself having a happy little accident and playing a vaiation of a tune. In fact I think I played a variation on the second verse of Sweet Hour of Prayer. If it sounds good - fine.

Super hymn and lovely tune in the Aolian mode. Thank you to whoever found it. Susan and I just had to learn it before we had supper! Judy's and Connie's recordings are delightful.

Here are 2 versions from Ron (eternalbro).

He writes about the 2nd version:
My second rendition, is with my Hoover D. My 5 year old son Joey, is whistling in the background. Alissa said she'd sing along, but she got interested in eating raisins, and shaking the box.

I like it, Ron -- both versions. What whistle are you playing? Sounds great & records well, too.

I could hear Joey's whistling (sounds pretty much on key, too!) ... but couldn't pick out Alissa eating raisins. :)

In the first one, I used my Hoover CPVC, a. It was my first attempt, and the one with the least amount of noise. I haven't listened to it since I recorded it, but if I remember correctly, I didn't get the melody quite right on that one.

I taught Joey to whistle when he was three, and he hasn't stopped since. Usually, when he whistles, you can pick out the tune, but he didn't know this one, so he just whistled along. Alissa, you have to catch when she's in the mood. 2 isn't really an age when you can count on them to do what you want. ( Come to think of it, when is that age?)

Here's a clip from Judy:

Connie's midi from Finale inspired me to work a little harder at finding a way to use a midi from Finale's Song Writer. The midi supplies acoustic guitar and 'whistle' harmony. The melody line is played on a one-of-a-kind clear polycarbonate Syn D.

Nicely done, Judy!!! But I didn't hear the guitar midi. Is that something you're working on for the future?

BTW, I like the harmony you chose. The downward progression works great for this melody.

Ron, I like those clips VERY much!! That son of yours shows promise. Nice ornamentation on the first clip, especially toward the end.

That's because Kitty posted the wrong link.

Check this version out from Judy; it's way cool! Sounds like the soundtrack to a Renaissance movie.

Here is Blackhawk's clip.

He writes:
"such as it is, on a Syn C"

Thanks, Judy. :)

I was really despairing over the click problem, and it got a lot worse this last week for no apparent reason. Sometimes it was almost like static, it was so bad. In desperation, I got a new mic, but that didn't work at all, so I plugged the old one back in. My wife sat down and did her usual hacking at this and that and finally threw up her arms saying "I can't find anything wrong." But there hasn't been a click since then. I asked her what she did and she said she can't remember. I don't know if we scared the old mic into working, or if just unplugging it and replugging it did something, or if my wife's hacking did the trick. I'm still holding my breath, but so far so good.

Ok, here's my rendition. It's ....... uh ................ a little different.

I had not heard this hymn so my first impression upon reading the chart was that the tune in the minor key didn't really match the bright lyrics, thus my arrangement. Maybe if I were Quaker it would make perfect sense to me. Anybody know the history, by the way?

Anyway, the whistle is my Mack Hoover Whitecap G - in the key of A minor (with some liberty taken with the chord progression).

 WOW!!!!!! I am completely blown away. All I could say while listening to this is, " This is AWESOME!!!" over and over again.

I wish I had half the talent you have. That arangement was awesome.

Kitty rocks!!

Kitty, I have a bunch of questions for you. Where did you get all those instruments? Do you play them all? Did you borrow LisaD's kids to play some stuff for you? Did you use ACID loops? Is that flute run toward the end a flute or a whistle?

I like the way you changed the chord progression. This amazing little tune can take all kinds of manipulation around it and still sound gorgeous. I think it's been our most inspiring tune yet.
