The well company says it's a cistern, with a pipe going into the ground to draw up non-potable water. The pipe does not need to be removed. We just need to open the enclosure up completely and fill it in. Total cost for materials and delivery will be less than $200, with the addition of our labor, of course. (The labor part is not tending to get easier with the passing of years.)

Nice that the repair price is shrinking with each post!

My brothers, a few years back, would have found a pitcher pump to see if water could still be found. Curiosity has always been a family 'failing'. ;)
